Hair is an element that can help shape a character’s personality. For example, in My Hero Academia, a popular manga and anime, Katsuki Bakugo’s hair is spiky with choppy bangs — a look that matches his anger.
We’ll show you how to draw bangs, including five popular styles you can experiment with:
- Blunt
- Curtain

How To Draw Blunt Bangs In 3 Steps
First up, let’s explore the steps to drawing blunt bangs. You know — the bangs with a sharp cut that fall across the forehead.
1. Create The Outline
Recommended tool: H pencil
We’ll show you how to draw bangs on a long-haired girl, with her hair falling behind her back.
(By the way, if you need help drawing faces, check out our step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a face!)
But let’s get back to drawing bangs.
The first thing we’ll do is outline the shape of the blunt bangs.
We want them to cover the girl’s eyebrows and cover about one-half of her upper eyelids.
So, let’s draw a curved line from one ear to the other, starting at eye level on one side. Point the line toward the eyebrows and curve it back toward the ear.
Next, connect both ends with the rest of the girl’s head, like this:

2. Add The Details
Recommended tool: HB pencil
Now, let’s add some details to the bangs.
Draw slightly curved spike-like shapes starting at the top of the forehead and point them to the bottom of the bangs.
Between the large spikes, add several shorter ones, like this:

3. Finalize Your Blunt Bangs Drawing
Recommended tools: HB pencil
To finalize your drawing, you can continue to use an HB pencil to add more thin lines all over the bangs.
Make sure that all lines have the same shape, because blunt bangs should not look messy:

How To Draw Curtain Bangs In 3 Steps
The next popular type of bangs we’ll draw are curtain bangs.
1. Create The Outline
Recommended tool: H pencil
Curtain bangs come in all sizes, but we’ll draw them in medium-length, softly framing the character’s face.
This time, we opted for a shorter hairstyle just below the ears, and the bangs will be of the same length.
Now, to draw curtain bangs, you can start by sketching a soft “M” with the peak in the middle of the forehead:

Next, add two curved lines at the top of the head, to mark the area where the bangs start.
Start at the middle of the head and then connect the lines to either side of the girl’s face, to form a heart-like shape:

2. Add The Details
Recommended tool: HB pencil
Now it’s time to add the lines that follow the “M” shape; these will help you add volume and texture to the bangs.
Start at the roots and then gently bring the lines down; be careful not to go over the main, face-framing strands:

Continue adding the lines that follow the shape of the girl’s head.
Go over the face-framing strands with your pencil to make them stand out more than the rest of the hair:

3. Finalize Your Curtain Bangs Drawing
Recommended tools: 4B and HB pencils
To finish your drawing of curtain bangs, combine different shades of grey.
Outline the bangs with particularly dark lines, then add lighter greys to the rest of the hair, like this:

How To Draw Long Bangs In 3 Steps
Long bangs look similar to curtain bangs, but they usually have less volume and are, well, longer than a curtain fringe.
1. Create The Outline
Recommended tools: H pencil
We’re back to drawing characters with long hairstyles.
Make sure to leave the top of the head clean for the bangs.
Now, the basic shape of the long bangs resembles a soft “V.”
Start drawing a line at the center of the girl’s forehead and point it toward the left ear lobe; then do the same and point the line toward the right ear lobe, like this:

2. Add The Details
Recommended tools: H and HB pencils
Next, let’s start adding more hair at the center of the head.
Draw two lines (one on the left and the other on the right) that follow the shape of the head, like so:

Use an HB pencil to add more hair strands all over the head or simply apply more pressure to make the lines more eye-catching:

3. Finalize Your Long Bangs Drawing
Recommended tools: HB pencil, kneaded eraser
To finalize your artwork, erase the parts that are covered with hair.
For instance, the tops of the character’s ears don’t show, so we erased them.
If you accidentally erase more than you planned, grab your pencil again and add the missing lines:

How To Draw Birkin Bangs In 3 Steps
Birkin bangs were popularized by the singer and actress Jane Birkin.
This type of fringe is softly cut and characterized by its wispy, feathery look.
1. Create The Outline
Recommended tools: H pencil
Let’s outline the shape of birkin bangs first.
Start at the center of your character’s head and draw two petal-like shapes.
Leave some room between the “petals” because we’re not drawing straight and thick bangs:

2. Add The Details
Recommended tools: H and HB pencils, kneaded eraser
Birkin bangs are all about their piecey structure, so, when drawing more hair strands, feel free to experiment with their length.
Mix longer and shorter strands to depict the feathery look of the bangs:

Use your kneaded eraser to erase the guidelines you drew in the first step.
Then, switch to an HB pencil to add more strands of hair at the front and enrich the bangs:

3. Finalize Your Birkin Bangs Drawing
Recommended tools: kneaded eraser
To finalize the drawing, use your eraser to remove the lines that reach the top of the forehead.
Only the strands in the middle should be long enough to reach the top of the forehead.
From there and toward the ears, the lines should gradually become shorter, like this:

How To Draw Anime Bangs In 3 Steps
Last but not least, we’ll show you how to draw anime bangs.
They’re usually straight and full, and almost every anime character has them!

Now, let’s draw more bangs!
1. Create The Outline
Recommended tools: H pencil
To outline anime bangs, connect the ears with a line that slightly curves once it reaches the nose. The line should also touch the inner corners of the eyebrows.
Then, draw a curved line to connect the ends of the straight line; make sure the top of the curve reaches the middle of the head, because anime bangs are usually long, like so:

2. Add The Details
Recommended tools: HB pencil
To add more hair strands, sketch spike-like shapes of various sizes.
Start from the middle with the smallest spikes, then alternate between long and short shapes, like so:

3. Finalize Your Anime Bangs Drawing
Recommended tools: HB pencil, kneaded eraser
To finish your drawing of anime bangs, let’s get rid of the lines that we no longer need.
Grab your eraser and remove the parts of the outline at the bottom, between the spikes.
Next, let’s erase the top of the outline, so that the bangs aren’t sharply separated from the rest of the girl’s hair:

To finish your drawing of anime bangs, add delicate shadows to the middle of the bangs.
You can do so just by sketching two short horizontal lines and then two more below, like so:
